Make Cycle Tracks Visible & Usable : Think , Plan and Implement Cycle Inclusive Development !

Dear Sir,

Thanks for the invite to give inputs for promoting use of bicycles in Pune,as reported in media.

We earnestly request:

1.Make the Cycle tracks distinctly visible to cyclists,vehicle users,adjacent property users/occupants and safely & conveniently usable.

2.At Most of the major junctions, Cycle tracks are chopped off to make way for vehicles,e.g., Swargate chowk & many places on Cycle Tracks on BRT Pilot route - Hadapsar-Swargate-Katraj and many more locations.

3.Connectivity be ensured and maintained.

4.All one way roads eg.,J M Rd , F C Rd etc. must provide distinct Cycle Lane on one side .

5.All encroachments be removed and system be in place to confiscate any vehicle/material on Cycle Tracks.

6.Police should act for vehicles/parking on cycle tracks on the same lines as being done for vehicles in NO ENTRY or NO PARKING.

7.Revive NMT cell and make it functional and effective.

8.Provide & Make Cycle Parking free at all PMC Establishments

9.Pursue and encourage all establishments to promote cycling and make cycle parking free.

10.Follow up with respective Ministries/Deptts of State & Central Govts to formulate National Massive Bicycle Policies, waive all taxes,levies,duties so that a good bicycle is available at Rs 1000/-

11. Keep the promises. Dont divert funds. Congress Standing Committee Chairman provided for Free distribution of 50000 cycles to needy school students; it never acted upon.

12. Its incorrect to say that Rent a bike is financially unviable.

Wrong  practices and preferences for Motorised vehicles oriented development plans and mindset in PMC is the deterrent.If there is a determined will there certainly is a way.

13. Sir, The Cycle Tracks promises again should not turn into 2014 Election Manifest Promises as evident from 2012 City Elections Manifesto Promises for Free mid-city bus & 50% fare cut.

PUNE: The city unit of the Congress party on Thursday promised free bus services in the congested Peth areas and a 50% cut in PMPML bus fares. In its manifesto for civic elections, it has also promised completion of mono and elevated metro railway in the city within five years. No civic taxes will be hiked in the next five years, the manifesto adds.

Many schemes announced on Thursday were listed in its 2002 and 2007 manifestos, including the promise to provide good roads, more buses, water transport."
