1939: Marian Anderson at
the Lincoln Memorial
In
1939, after being told she couldn’t perform an Easter concert for the Daughters of
the American Revolution (DAR), African American opera star Marian Anderson held
a performance at the Lincoln Memorial that prompted organizations to change their segregationist
policies. In this image by an unknown photographer, the vocalist is pictured
