Waitomo Glowworm Caves,
Waitomo, New Zealand
The
Waitomo caves are beautiful in their own right, with their airy chambers and
winding underground river. But it’s the caves’ glittering residents that make
them so otherworldly. Arachnocampa Luminosa glow worms – a bioluminescent
species native to New Zealand – collected here in their thousands, illuminating
the caverns and putting on a twinkling show for the tourists who typically take
guided boat rides here.
