Friday's massive sell-off ruins January barometer market signal

The stock sell-off deepened on the last day of January on concerns that the deadly coronavirus will disrupt the global economy and in the process, ruining an old market indicator that was signaling a positive year.

As goes January, so goes the year: This Wall Street saying from the widely watched "January barometer" suggests a correlation between January's performance and full-year returns.

US tourists helped thwart theft of Magna Carta from English cathedral

A group of American tourists, along with members of the British public, stopped the theft of the Magna Carta in Salisbury Cathedral.
Mark Royden, 47, is accused of starting a fire within the cathedral to cause a distraction and attempting to steal the Magna Carta. After causing dysfunction within the building, Royden, a Canterbury resident, is accused of running to smash the document's protective case with a hammer.
Rob Welling, a lawyer prosecuting Royden, told a Salisbury court that American tourists notified others of the attempted theft. "He's trying to steal the Magna Carta, stop him!" he said they cried. Royden struggled with several individuals before attempting to flee the cathedral. He was caught by a few stonemasons working outside.
Royden told them, "Your security's sh-t."

Health experts: Human-to-human spread of new virus worrying

World health officials expressed “great concern” Wednesday that a dangerous new virus is starting to spread between people outside of China, a troubling development as China and the world frantically work to contain the outbreak. For a second day, the number of infections grew dramatically.

The new virus has now infected more people in China than were sickened there during the 2002-2003 SARS outbreak. On Wednesday, the number of cases jumped to 5,974, surpassing the 5,327 people diagnosed with SARS.

US embassy attack: Rockets strike embassy compound in Baghdad

Three rockets struck the US Embassy compound in Baghdad on Sunday, leaving one person injured, a US official told CNN initial reports indicate.
The official said the injury was minor and the individual had since returned to duty.
A State Department spokesperson said Sunday evening that they "are aware of reports of rockets landing in the International Zone," but did not address the US embassy itself. The State Department did not respond to a query as to whether any embassy employees were injured.
"We call on the Government of Iraq to fulfill its obligations to protect our diplomatic facilities," the spokesperson said.
