US conducts airstrikes in Iraq in retaliation for attack that killed 2 Americans

The U.S. military conducted airstrikes in various locations inside Iraq on Thursday targeting an Iranian-backed militia group it says is responsible for Wednesday's rocket attack that killed two American service members, a British service member and wounded 14 others.

In a statement, the Pentagon characterized the strikes as "defensive, proportional, and in direct response to the threat posed by Iranian-backed Shia militia groups" to coalition bases in Iraq.

Coronavirus pandemic "over by June" if countries act, says Chinese adviser

The global coronavirus pandemic could be over by June if countries mobilize to fight it, a senior Chinese medical adviser said on Thursday, as China declared the peak had passed there and new cases in Hubei fell to single digits for the first time.
Around two-thirds of global cases of the coronavirus have been recorded in China's central Hubei province, where the virus first emerged in December. But in recent weeks the vast majority of new cases have been outside China.

Tokyo 2020 organisers insist Olympics on despite virus 'concern'

Preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this summer are going ahead "as scheduled," organisers insisted on Wednesday, while acknowledging they are "concerned" about the spread of the new coronavirus.

Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori made the comments after a member of the organisers' executive board sounded the alarm on the virus outbreak, warning postponing the Games for two years might be the best option under the circumstances.

Putin dumps Saudi leader to start a war on America's shale oil industry

At 10:16 a.m. on a wet and dreary Friday morning, Russia’s energy minister walked into OPEC’s headquarters in central Vienna knowing his boss was ready to turn the global oil market upside down.

Alexander Novak told his Saudi Arabian counterpart Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman that Russia was unwilling to cut oil production further. The Kremlin had decided that propping up prices as the coronavirus ravaged energy demand would be a gift to the U.S. shale industry. The frackers had added millions of barrels of oil to the global market while Russian companies kept wells idle. Now it was time to squeeze the Americans.

World markets spiral as coronavirus fear unleashes oil-price war; U.S. spread continues

A new oil price war sparked by the coronavirus sent shock waves through financial markets, with stocks tumbling around the world as more countries implemented measures to contain the outbreak and the United States’ tally of known infections passed 500.
U.S. futures pointed to heavy losses on Wall Street on Monday. Overseas, London’s FTSE 100 fell more than 8 percent initially to its lowest in three years; Japan’s Nikkei index slumped more than 5 percent and Australia’s benchmark shed more than 7 percent. Oil prices suffered the sharpest plunge since the 1991 Gulf War, while 10-year U.S. bond yields dropped to a record low as investors sought safety. The moves underscored increasing alarm about the economic fallout from the coronavirus epidemic.

Russia Says New U.S. Weapon Threatens Nuclear War

Russia has criticized the Trump administration's pursuit and deployment of low-yield nuclear warheads, arguing it may raise the prospects of a nuclear conflict. At the same time, however, the United States estimates its top foe has up to 2,000 such warheads.
Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova on Friday blasted the $28.9 billion budget proposed for the Pentagon's nuclear modernization program, along with the additional $15.6 billion earmarked for the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration's efforts to revamp the U.S. nuclear warhead arsenal. Among the weapons being developed and deployed is the W76-2, a nuclear warhead with lower yields that Zakharova and others contend could make them a more readily-available option in the event of a conflict.
