Christ the Redeemer, Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil
Whether you're religious or not, the sight of
a 98-foot (30m) Christ rising above Rio de Janeiro's magical mountainous
landscape with outstretched arms is a remarkable sight. The largest Art
Deco statue in the world, the iconic monument was the brainchild of a priest in
the 1850s but wasn't built until the 1920s. Dedicated in 1931, the concrete Christ
has surveyed the city from the top of the forest-clad Corcovado mountain ever
since and is one of Brazil’s most visited sights.
