2001: Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks
Reuters photographer Anthony Correia began his routine subway commute to
work in lower Manhattan on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. His train was underground
when airplanes struck the Twin Towers and after 45 minutes, rerouted to 14th
Street. From there he emerged into the altered landscape of a city in the
throes of horror and trauma. His photograph of an unidentified New York City
firefighter walking away from Ground Zero after the collapse of the World Trade
Center’s Twin Towers captures the pervasive sense of shock, devastation, and
uncertainty.

April 20, 1999, former Columbine High School students Eric Harris and Dylan
Klebold opened fire inside the Littleton,
Colorado school, killing 15 and injuring 23
others. The teenage perpetrators, who were reportedly bullied by fellow
classmates, were considered social outcasts. In this image by Hector Mata,

1998: Bill Clinton
testifies before a grand jury
On
Aug. 17, 1998, President Clinton testified before a grand jury, admitting he'd
had an improper relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. "I
did have a relationship with Miss Lewinsky that was not appropriate,” he told the jury. "In fact, it was wrong. It constituted
a critical lapse in judgment and a personal failure on my part for which I am
solely and completely responsible.” The following day, news photographer Luke
Frazza captured this image of the president leaving for Martha’s Vineyard
with wife Hillary, daughter Chelsea, and dog Buddy.

Dodi Fayed were chased by paparazzi photographers. Their driver crashed the
vehicle as a result, and all three lost their lives. More than 1 million
grieving spectators lined the route of Diana's
procession from Kensington Palace to
Westminster Cathedral. In this iconic photo by Jeff J. Mitchell, Prince William
and Prince Harry, then 15 and 12 years old, follow their mother's coffin
alongside father Prince Charles, grandfather Prince Philip, and Diana’s brother
Earl Spencer.

कॉमनवेल्थ बिल्डींगवरून कुंटे चौकातून पुढे आलो की आपण एका ऐतिहासिक ठिकाणापाशी येतो. हे ठिकाण म्हणजे हुजूरपागा. या जागेवर आता मुलींची शाळा आहे, पण पूर्वी इथे पेशव्यांची पागा होती. शनिवारवाड्याच्या नैऋत्येला आंबिल ओढ्याच्या पलीकडे सगळी हिरवीगार मोकळी जागा होती. त्यातल्या जवळजवळ ४ एकर जागेत पेशव्यांच्या हुजुरातीच्या घोड्यांची पागा होती. तीच ही हुजूरपागा. पुढे पेशवाई संपली. जागा ओस पडली. त्यात प्रचंड गवत वाढले. सन १८५७ नंतर इंग्रजांचे राज्य स्थिरस्थावर झाले. मग पुण्याची नगरपालिका स्थापन झाली आणि पुढे शिक्षणसंस्था स्थापन झाल्या. १९ जुलै १८८४ साली हिराबागेच्या टाऊन हॉलमधे सरकारी अधिकारी आणि काही प्रतिष्ठित नागरिक यांच्यात सभा भरली होती. या सभेचे अध्यक्ष सर विल्यम वेडरबर्न हे होते. ‘स्त्रियांचे अज्ञान दूर झाल्याशिवाय हिंदुस्थानची स्थिती सुधारणार नाही’ या विचाराने या वेडरबर्न साहेबाने आपल्या दिवंगत बंधूंच्या स्मरणार्थ १०००० रुपयांची देणगी स्त्री शिक्षणासाठी जाहीर केली. त्यानुसार २ ऑक्टोबर १८८४ रोजी श्री महादेव गोविंद रानडे, डॉ. रा. गो. भांडारकर आणि शं. म. पंडित यांच्या पुढाकाराने महाराष्ट्र गर्ल्स एज्युकेशन सोसायटीचे ‘फीमेल हायस्कूल’ सुरु झाले. भारतातील ही दुसरी मुलींची माध्यमिक शाळा. पहिली कलकत्त्यात स्थापन झाली होती. सुरुवातीला या शाळेत १८ मुली दाखल झाल्या आणि पुढे ही संख्या ४५ पर्यंत गेली. सर्व जाती-धर्माच्या मुली या शाळेत शिकत होत्या. पहिली जवळजवळ ५० वर्षे इथल्या मुख्याध्यापिका या युरोपीय, ख्रिश्चन, पारशी स्त्रिया होत्या. ही शाळा म्हणजे श्रीमंत, उच्चभ्रू आणि वैचारिकदृष्ट्या पुढारलेल्या स्त्रियांची आणि विद्यार्थिनींची शाळा असा काहीसा समज या शाळेबद्दल पसरला होता. आवडीबाई भिडे ही या शाळेची पहिली विद्यार्थिनी असल्याचे सांगितले जाते. पुढे या शाळेने अनेक उत्तमोत्तम विद्यार्थिनी या देशाला दिल्या. भारताच्या माजी पंतप्रधान इंदिराजी गांधीनीसुद्धा एक वर्ष या शाळेत शिक्षण घेतल्याचे सांगतात. या शाळेमुळेच या रस्त्याला फीमेल हायस्कूलचा रस्ता असे म्हणत असत. हा रस्ता पुढे जाऊन आज जिथे बाजीराव रस्ता मिळतो तिथे संपत असे.
