A trip to the last century!

1996: Dolly the Sheep

On July 5, 1996, a Finnish Dorset lamb codenamed 6LL3 was born in Scotland. The newborn—"Dolly the Sheep”—was the first mammal to be successfully cloned via "somatic cell nuclear transfer.” The lab kept the lamb a secret for seven months until the paper was published on Feb. 22, 1997. In this photo by Jeff J. Mitchell, assistant curator of biomedicine Sophie Goggins views Dolly at a 20th birthday celebration.
