Uber sees profit by end of 2020, but still expects full-year loss

Uber Technologies Inc on Thursday moved forward by a year its target to achieve a measure of profitability to the fourth quarter of 2020, but the ride-hailing company still expects to lose a total of more than $1 billion this year.

Uber shares were up 5% in after-hours trading on the news, with Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi saying the company would cut costs, aim to generate more repeat-customer business and try to increase use of premium ride services.

Flights resume at Istanbul airport after plane crash kills 3

Flights resumed Thursday at an Istanbul airport after a Turkish airliner skidded off a runway, killing three people and injuring dozens.
Sabiha Gokcen Airport restarted operations around 4 a.m. (0100 GMT) though delays and cancellations continued.
On Wednesday evening, a Boeing 737 operated by Pegasus Airline landed from Izmir on Turkey's western coast during strong winds and heavy rain and overshot the runway. It skidded about 50-60 meters (yards) before it dropped into the ditch from a height of about 30 meters (98 feet), according to the city's governor, Ali Yerlikaya.

Two rats at India's Karni Mata Temple box to determine which is dominant. Rats are social animals that take good care of their offspring. Studies show they will free a fellow rat from a small cage—even if it means giving up a treat. This suggests to some researchers that rats feel empathy.

Buttigieg, Sanders Take Lead in Iowa

After a day of confusion and recriminations over a technical mishap that snarled the vote count, the first wave of delayed results from Iowa’s presidential caucuses showed Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders at the top of the Democratic pack.

The early numbers, representing nearly three-quarters of precincts, suggested a possible split verdict that could have one candidate winning the popular vote and another securing the most delegates, the measure state and national party officials have said should determine the victor.

Pakistan bucks trend and resumes flights to virus-hit China

Airlines in Pakistan resumed flights to and from China Monday after health authorities said they were confident they had systems in place to keep the deadly coronavirus out of the country.

The move comes as dozens of global airlines are halting flight services with China, and governments are increasingly barring entry to anyone who has recently visited the country.
China has long been an all-weather ally of Pakistan and in recent years has provided Islamabad with billions of dollars in loans as part of Beijing’s global Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.
