Best Bridges in the World

Tower Bridge, London, England
Completed 126 years ago, Tower Bridge (not to be confused with the simpler London Bridge to the west) is one of London's most recognizable landmarks, known for its Victorian engine rooms and its glass-bottomed viewing deck. Upon its completion it was one of the largest bascule (moveable) bridges in the world and its hulking towers and bold blue expanse remains an icon of the Big Smoke to this day.

A Mathematician, an engineer and a physicist were traveling through Scotland when they saw a black sheep through the window of the train.

“Aha”, says the engineer, “I see that Scottish sheep are black.”

“Hmm”, says the physicist, “You mean that some Scottish sheep are black”.

“No”, says the mathematician, “All we know is that there is at least one sheep in Scotland, and that at least one side of that one sheep is black!”

Trump renews threat to cut ties with Beijing, a day after high-level U.S.-China talks

President Donald Trump on Thursday renewed his threat to cut ties with China, a day after his top diplomats held talks with Beijing and his trade representative said he did not consider decoupling the U.S. and Chinese economies a viable option.

The top U.S. diplomat for East Asia described U.S.-China relations as "tense" after their first high-level face-to-face diplomatic talks in months, although he said Beijing did recommit to the first part of a trade deal reached this year and that coming weeks would show if there had been progress.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts
The Berkshires have long been an escape for New York and Boston urbanites, and one visit to the region may make you fall in love as well. The hilly area happens to be one of the best places for fall foliage in the U.S., especially if you take in the views along the 63-mile Mohawk Trail—arguably the most picturesque drive in all of Massachusetts.

U.N. vote deals Trudeau embarrassing defeat on world stage

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s bid to get Canada back on the United Nations Security Council was dashed Wednesday, dealing the staunch defender of global institutions a decisive and embarrassing loss.

India, Mexico, Norway and Ireland won temporary seats on the United Nations Security Council — the organization’s most powerful forum — for 2021-2022. The Security Council election, which takes place in regional brackets, saw Canada suffer its second loss in as many attempts, beaten in the first round of voting by much smaller Norway and Ireland.

US airlines can resume limited flights to China

American airlines have been cleared to resume a limited schedule of flights to China after an agreement between the two countries to defuse what was shaping up to be .

The three largest US airlines — American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines — were all flying to China before the coronavirus pandemic, but demand dropped off sharply as the outbreak took hold and they eventually suspended their flights in February when the US government imposed travel restrictions.
Four Chinese carriers operated throughout the pandemic at a reduced schedule of one weekly flight each between the two countries. But when Delta and United sought to resume service June 1, the US airlines were blocked by Chinese government regulations, according to the US Department of Transportation.

France says 'no nuclear accident' during submarine fire

A fire that raged for 14 hours on one of France's nuclear-powered attack submarines did not lead to an atomic accident as steps were taken to protect its reactor, the defence minister said Saturday.

The submarine was under renovation in the southern base of Toulon when the blaze broke out at about 10:30 am (0830 GMT) on Friday in a hard-to-access part of the lower bow section, the navy said.
It then took around 100 firefighters and 150 support crew to put out the blaze by around midnight (2200 GMT Friday), the navy said in a statement.
