Flex-ible Nuisance

Illegal hoardings and flex boards dotting the city's skylines and footpaths may stay in the absence of any concrete action from the Pune Municipal Corporation so far.

In a latest, the anti-encroachment department of the PMC has passed the buck on ward offices. Ward officers have been asked to register police case against those who put up illegal hoardings and deface the city. We will take strict action against those responsible," as per PMC directive. However, PMC failed to explain what action has been taken against the violators so far.

Charity begins at home

Why one should inculcate values of charity by leading financial consultant Amol Erande.

The practice of charity means the voluntary giving of help to those in need who are not related to the giver I keep coming across individuals who want to do something good for the society but lack ideas and ways to do the same or the subject of charity is pretty low on the agenda. Hence some of them take the shorter and easier route i.e. donating some money to renowned foundations. But a big CONCERN here is that the donor has very little idea as to who is the exact individual benefitting from the effort.

Year of Revolution, lack of leadership, sad exits and world cup....

Citizen journalist Gautam Naik reviews 2011 an year gone by...

2011 was a very strange year. It started with lot of promise with markets buoyant. Indian economy was shining as compared to Europe, US and things were finally looking promising as it was felt that world has recovered after 2007 great recession. Worldwide things remained same; curious, cautious and no solution was found for Europe crisis. The things did not turn out as bad as it were projected in the US market. Thanks to that, IT story still has another day to survive. Also new technologies like cloud and some interesting innovations in Mobile space have driven many corporate IT spending. Real estate industry as usual chose to hold on the rates but had to offer discounts and thus correction was applied. But real danger to Indian economy arisen in form of non action by the govt. UPA1 did well in 2008 to shield India from crisis. But UPA2 as bungling it is on other fronts have been so static that investors lost confidence by last few quarters of 2011, resulting in fall of rupee, flight of capital outside and many such effects. Inflation which was out of control by start of year at least has some respite by the end thanks to good monsoon and some real corrections.

The new planet was discovered by Nasa’s Kepler space telescope two years ago but new research has identified it as the most similar to our own yet discovered.

Kepler 22b is about twice the size of Earth and has temperatures which average around 72 degrees (22 Celsius).

It also contains the right atmosphere to potentially support life. However, there is a downside: it is 600 light years from Earth.
