Vanquish the Virus? Australia and New Zealand Aim to Show the Way

Thousands of miles from President Trump’s combative news briefings, a conservative leader in Australia and a progressive prime minister in New Zealand are steadily guiding their countries toward a rapid suppression of the coronavirus outbreak.

Both nations are now reporting just a handful of new infections each day, down from hundreds in March, and they are converging toward an extraordinary goal: completely eliminating the virus from their island nations.

If Château de Chillon looks familiar, it might be because Prince Eric's castle in Disney's The Little Mermaid was inspired by the Lake Geneva structure. (Sorry, Ariel. Fresh-water mermaids only.) The chateau has been in use since the Bronze Age as a fortress, arsenal, prison, and residence for counts. Lord Byron romanticized the site in his 1816 poem "The Prisoner of Chillon," and it remains a popular historic destination  for day-trippers from Geneva. as it's only about two hours by car, on the opposite side of the lake from the Swiss city.

Global famines of 'biblical proportions' will be caused by coronavirus pandemic, UN warns

The world is facing multiple famines of "biblical proportions" in just a matter of months, the UN has said, warning that the coronavirus pandemic will push an additional 130 million people to the brink of starvation.

Famines could take hold in "about three dozen countries" in a worst-case scenario, the executive director of the World Food Programme (WFP) said in a stark address on Tuesday. Ten of those countries already have more than 1 million people on the verge of starvation, he said.

Trump administration working out details of suspending immigration during coronavirus crisis, plans to close off the United States to a new extreme

Attorneys and senior Trump administration officials are meeting Tuesday to work out the logistics and legal implications of the president’s order to freeze the U.S. immigration system in response to the coronavirus pandemic, according to senior officials involved with the plans. 

Trump decreed via tweet late Monday that he intends to sign an executive order suspending immigration to the United States, but the president appears to have again publicly declared a U.S. policy that was not yet ready for implementation, leaving his aides rushing to deliver on his pronouncement.

Nova Scotia Shooting: Suspected gunman evaded police for about 12 hours after killing 16 people

Nova Scotia authorities have begun investigating the shooting of a gunman who may have been disguised as a police officer and went on 12-hour rampage that left 16 people dead in a small town.

A confrontation with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police began after a manhunt for the fleeing suspect overnight Saturday. Multiple crime scenes and hours of evasion later, the gunman was killed Sunday in a shootout with police. Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) took over the investigation into the death, according to a statement from SiRT.
