Thrillers

Killing Floor

- Author name: Lee Child
- Date published: 1997

Lee Child’s debut novel, and the first book to feature Jack Reacher, “Killing Floor” is one of the best thrillers to come out of the past few decades. In the book, Reacher, an ex-military policeman, is accused of a murder he didn’t commit, and, while attempting to clear his name, stumbles upon some heavy criminal activity that he takes upon himself to stop. Heavy on violence, the book reads like an ’80s action movie in the best way possible.

The Great Influenza

- Author name: John M. Barry
- Date published: 2004

The horrors of “The Great Influenza” are certainly compounded by present circumstances, i.e., the coronavirus, but even if the world wasn’t in the midst of a global pandemic, this nonfiction historical thriller would still be capable of sending chills down your spine. Written in 2004, the book dives into the terrifying reality of the last global pandemic: the 1918 flu, or the Spanish flu. A wonderfully-written book, the novel was so influential it inspired President George W. Bush to create a comprehensive pandemic plan in 2005.

The Sun Down Motel

There’s something sinister going on at the Sun Down Motel in Upstate New York. Simone St. James’ second offering, “The Sun Down Motel” was an instant bestseller, equal parts compelling and creepy.

Part dystopian sci-fi tale, part mystery thriller, Booker Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro’s sixth novel “Never Let Me Go” is a critical examination of collective morals and the way society chooses to treat the vulnerable.
