Lake Baikal, Siberia, Russia
The deepest lake in the world and one of the clearest too, Lake
Baikal in the depths of Siberia is a place that compels superlatives. Known as
the pearl of Siberia, its icy waters plunge down an astonishing 5,387 foot
(1,642m) into the earth. It's bigger by volume than all the Great Lakes of
America combined. You could stack three Empire State Buildings on top of the
other and still not reach the surface. Home to many creatures that can't be
found anywhere else on the planet, legend has it that taking a dip in its
mysterious waters will lengthen your life.
