Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico
1144 A.D.
One
of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States, Acoma
Pueblo rests on a 365-foot mesa about 60 miles west of Albuquerque. Influences
of ancient Pueblo people are found in the artistry, farming style, and
architecture of the Acoma. The isolated location has sheltered the community for
more than 1,200 years with original inhabitants seeking protection from Apache
and Navajo peoples.
