1948: Babe Ruth's final
appearance at Yankee Stadium
In June of 1948, American baseball legend
Babe Ruth made his final appearance at Yankee Stadium. Weakened by cancer
that would soon claim his life, friends helped Ruth into his uniform. "He looked tired, very tired; the
power that had been his in his youth and manhood was slowly ebbing away,” photographer Nat Fein recalled. The beloved sports icon nevertheless
received a roaring ovation from the stands, and Fein’s image, shot for the New
York Herald Tribune, won a Pulitzer Prize the following year.
In
this image, taken a few years later, a young sports fan presses his nose to the
glass and gazes in awe at the glove worn by Babe Ruth himself at the
Cooperstown Hall of Fame and Baseball Museum.
