A trip to the last century!

1968: Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the Olympics

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, U.S. track and field athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos stood barefoot on the podium to accept their gold and bronze medals. The athletes wore black gloves and raised their fists in solidarity, protesting racial discrimination following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Vietnam War. This photo shows the two men with their arms raised.
