1991: Boris Yeltsin becomes president

On Feb. 24, 1991, Boris Yeltsin became the first popularly elected president of Russia, securing 59% of the vote. This photograph by Vitaly Armand depicts pro-Yeltsin supporters holding up portraits of the newly elected leader to call attention away from a conservative rally held under Moscow's Kremlin Wall.
