The
subprime mortgage crisis that had begun unfolding the previous year came to a head in 2008, causing some of
the world's biggest lenders and financial institutions to collapse. The events
launched a global recession, and the financial crisis, which ultimately led to
a series of bailout packages, was the biggest economic downturn since the Great
