2010: Haiti earthquake
On Jan. 12, 2010,
the island nation of Haiti was struck by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, leaving
hundreds of thousands of people dead, missing, or displaced. The earthquake
decimated the nation’s infrastructure, affecting an estimated 3 million
people—roughly one-third of the population. In this photo by Joe Raedle, the
aftermath of the disaster can be seen in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.
