Statue of Liberty, New
York, USA
A symbol of freedom and a beacon of hope, the
colossal torch-bearing figure that looms over New York Harbor is one of the
world's most recognized statues. The copper structure was designed by
sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel as a gift to
the United States from the people of France in 1886. Representing the
Roman goddess Libertas, she holds a torch and a tablet inscribed with the
date of the American Declaration of Independence. At over 305-feet tall (93m),
