The Tokyo National Museum
was established in the year 1872. It is the oldest Japanese national museum,
the largest art museum in Japan and one of the largest art museums in the
world. The museum collects, houses, and preserves a comprehensive collection of
artworks and archaeological objects of Asia, focusing primarily on ancient
Japanese art and Asian art along the Silk Road. It also has an extensive
collection of Greco-Buddhist art.
